Stress Caused By Finals

It’s Finals week at GW and many students are feeling very stressed. If you didn’t know, finals week is the week where almost every class you have gives a test. It’s supposed to judge how well you retained information throughout the year. However, because of this, so many students feel the pressure to do well and this stresses so many of them. This stress can lead to sleep deprivation, eating disorders, and high blood pressure, the week or the week before finals. This will make students perform less well during finals, which is the complete opposite of what everyone wants. Finals need to change or else we me may be setting up students to fail.

“Right before finals I feel very stressed and overwhelmed,” states Ariella. “It makes me want to pack on study time.” It has been shown many times that studying or doing a test while you are stressed is not the best idea. According to the website, The Best Colleges, “Stress hinders learning. UC Irvine researchers find that stress lasting as briefly as a couple of hours can engage corticotropin-releasing hormones that disrupt the process of creating and storing memories.” If this is what happens when stress lasts a few hours imagine the stress lasting for a couple days or a week before finals. A relaxed student performs better and is able to retain more than a stressed one. Everyone wants the students to succeed but the way finals are right now just leads them to be stressed. This can lead to many health problems as well.

The way finals are now, doesn’t help anybody. If we were to change the way we present finals, it’ll help everyone a lot better. If teachers presented tests that covered only one unit in each, it’ll greatly reduce stress. For example, if there were three units in math for the semester, the math teacher would make individual tests for each so it would distribute the load out. If they presented these tests on different days it would also make it easier for the students. If we can change finals like this, students would be much less stressed and teachers would have more papers but less work to grade. Everyone wins and everyone can enjoy their break.
