The Season Starts Now
As fall sports are ending, winter sports are picking up and getting ready for games. Winter sports include basketball, swimming, and wrestling. All of these sports are indoors because winter in Colorado is not suitable for outdoor sports unless it is skiing or snowboarding. In other states around the US, some sports are played out of “season” and even played year round. For example, an Arizona club baseball team could probably beat a Minnesota club team because in Arizona, they can play year round. The George Washington baseball team wants to follow the footsteps of year round ball clubs and enhance their skills out of season.
You’re probably asking yourself, “It is cold, windy, and snowy during a Colorado winter, how can this team better themselves while the weather isn’t ideal for baseball?” Well, fall ball in Colorado is a competitive league to help high school teams get some practice before their CHSAA season. Not everyone could participate in fall ball due to other sports happening at the same time. For a team without all of their secret weapons, the GW fall ball team did fairly well, ending the season with a .500 record, winning half of the games they played in. Now during the winter, it is time to focus on the fundamental mechanics that can improve each and every member.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, the team is in the weight room at George Washington, building the necessary muscle to drive the ball at the plate and shoot lasers on the diamond. Tuesdays and Thursdays the team goes to Legends, an indoor batting cage where you can get the help you need on your swing. Coach Ron Harris tells the GW Surveyor, “The season starts now. We need to develop not as individuals but as a team as well and these winter workouts will help us a lot in the long run.”
This will be Harris’s second year as head coach of the Patriots, but he has been a part of the program for a few years now. Last year, the Patriots started off rocky, starting out the season with a record of 1-6. They had a change of attitude and heart and won 7 of their last 10 games making a push for the playoffs. Unfortunately they came up just short of the playoffs with a record of 9-10, but that push gave the 2019 Patriots hope to prove everyone wrong. This team has everything to prove and with the up and coming senior class, these goals are possible for this team. The kids coming up from the JV had an amazing season last year ending 10-4. They hope to bring the same energy to the varsity level and to the home opener on March 8th, 2019 against the Montbello Warriors. Keep up the good work Patriots!
